Sharon Outland began employment in the St. Johns County Property Appraiser’s office in 1979 following a career in banking. Her 1996 election to the office of Property Appraiser came after years of service in every component of the office.
Since becoming Property Appraiser, Sharon has served on many committees for the Florida Association of Property Appraisers (F.A.P.A.) and Property Appraisers’ Association of Florida (P.A.A.F.). She is the immediate past-President of F.A.P.A. In P.A.A.F., she held the offices of Secretary and First Vice-President and served as Association President for 1999-2000. She served on the Auditor General’s Task Force and has served as a member of the Property Tax Administration Task Force since its inception in 1999. Over her years of service, she has worked with associations, local officials and the legislative body to promote legislation to better serve the citizens of our community and the state of Florida. Some of the legislation that she has developed and/or supported includes dropping the requirement for two doctors’ certificates to one to qualify for disability exemptions and removing the requirement for annual reapplication for those eligible for the over 65 additional homestead exemption. These initiatives lessen the burden of the application process for those eligible. Additionally, Outland strongly supported increasing the Veteran’s Exemption from $500 to $5000. She continues to be a very active lobbyist for the individual taxpayer's rights.
Additionally, Outland has worked diligently on the home front to bring government to the people. This website not only gives assessment roll data but also provides information in regard to exemptions, agricultural classifications, tangible personal property and all other facets of ad valorem property appraisal. In May 2003, after many years of tireless efforts by Outland and her staff, she proudly added Internet mapping to the website. It is now possible to view digitally-rectified aerial photographs of all St. Johns County properties via the Internet. As technology improves, so does the website. Information that was not available a very short time ago is now available at the click of a key.
